Let's Talk About Lighting- ORC Week 5
It's week 5 of the One Room Challenge, which means it's crunch time. I still have a lot to do and lost all of last week helping my sister with her new house, but I know I can get it done. One thing we did get done this week is the lighting install, and wow does it make a huge difference! One of my very favorite items to source is light fixtures. Why you may ask? Because they are so important to the room!
First off, there are 3 different types of lighting- Task lighting, ambient lighting and mood light and they all serve a purpose. First, you need illumination in certain areas to permit people to perform specific tasks, such as reading, writing, or playing a musical instrument. This type of lighting is referred to as task lighting. You also need sufficient overall illumination so people can see where they’re going. This general lighting is referred to as ambient lighting, which is the overall lighting that permeates the room. Last but still very important, you can use lighting to influence the mood of a room—by the general feeling of the illumination, by the style of fixtures, and by the use of mood lighting as accents. When you create a harmony with all 3 you can completely change the feeling and look of the room!
For this room I knew I wanted task lighting by the bed for reading, but also wanted it dimmable so that it could double as mood lighting. I also have an overhead light that serves as ambient lighting and will probably place a small lamp in the room for additional mood lighting. So I have all my bases covered with function but what about the aesthetic? The way the fixtures look affect how the room reads and I wanted a traditional, Grand millennial style. I am working with ,,Crystorama for lighting in this room and I am so excited!
They have SO many gorgeous fixtures in every style imaginable! And you can guess from the name they are the masters of crystals and bling! Go check out their website to see the many gorgeous collections they offer:,, click here.I selected ,,the Marshall, a classic swing arm sconce in aged brass that evokes comfort and luxury by each side of the bed. They dim and adjust so if you're reading, watching tv, on your phone, etc you can set that mood. It can be hard wired in or plug in, which is what we did. I also picked ,,the Nina for my overhead light. I loved the matte white and scalloped edge. It has so much personality and is perfect for this room!
Both of these fixtures would work in so many different rooms, from an adult bedroom to a child's bedroom to an office or living room and more. They are so stylish and truly changed how the room felt! The assembly and install was very simple and took my husband around an 1.5 hour for all 3. Most of that time was me measuring the exact space I wanted the Marshall, lol.
I don't want to reveal too much of the room yet as you will see it all next week! Follow along on Instagram and in my stories to see more behind the scenes! As always, thanks for reading- I appreciate you being here!
